The first two attempts were smoother than butter for Perkins, who called for a world record weight on the barbell on his third attempt. Although he apparently hit a rough patch halfway into his ascent, it didn’t last long, and he stood up cleanly, locking out a weight that had never been achieved in sanctioned competition.

Perkins displayed much excitement after getting the signal from the judges that the lift was good. While his record eclipsed Taylor Atwood‘s previous raw squat world record of 303 kilograms from the 2021 USAPL Raw Nationals, Perkins also flirted with the all-time raw total record as well.

“[A] small adjustment I made was hand placement and bar placement,” Perkins wrote in an Instagram post following his squat performance. “I took a wider grip and placed [the] bar a bit lower than usual…to get more of a vertical squat position. When I feel more upright, I also feel more explosive.”

Perkins’ 825-kilogram raw total was the second heaviest ever, only trailing Atwood’s 838.5-kilogram world record total from the same event Atwood set the former raw squat world record. We’ll see if Perkins targets that total world record in future contests, but until then, there’s a new king of the squat at 75 kilograms.
