Mike O’Hearn Discusses Steroids With Transcend’s Co-Founders Ernie Colling and Jesse Kessler

Episode 31 of The Mike O’Hearn Show was published on Generation Iron‘s YouTube channel on Feb. 3, 2023. It featured the show’s namesake discussing when it is reasonable to use steroids with the Transcend team of Ernie Colling and Jesse Kessler. Transcend is a health and wellness company that has worked with many elite athletes, including seven-time Mr. Olympia Phil Heath and Men’s Physique competitor Jason Poston.

O’Hearn opens the discussion by commenting on the hard work of disciplined actors who have overhauled their physiques to become chiseled specimens for the silver screen. He remarked about how many on social media surrounding the fitness industry jumped to the conclusion that they must have used steroids to achieve their physiques, implying that an easy road of drugs garnered results rather than a lot of hard work in the gym and in the kitchen

O’Hearn suggested that younger athletes in the health and fitness industry jump to using steroids early in their lives when they don’t need them. The conversation with Colling and Kessler dives further into that subject matter and when it is appropriate to use steroids. Check it out below:

While O’Hearn appeared distraught that many athletes use steroids when they shouldn’t and that they can be dangerous if not monitored closely, he referred to steroids as a “miracle” that is often misunderstood by people who use it or intend to use it. Colling furthered the notion by saying that steroids are “very powerful. That’s why you don’t need much of it.”

An ongoing sentiment pushed by O’Hearn throughout this series advocates for listeners and viewers to get their blood work done. This is to learn where one’s levels for things like testosterone are and make educated health decisions based on the blood work findings.

Kessler mentioned that taking too much of a steroid can lead to adverse effects, which is why education about steroids is vital. Using steroids under the guidance of a physician might be warranted to balance out certain levels in the blood, but that is done with a goal in mind rather than the belief that steroids will somehow lead to elite bodybuilding aesthetics. Collings continued:

“Find out what your [blood] levels are before, during, and after so you can make educated decisions and not regret it.”
